What actually makes a mattress better

Support core

Hybrids sit on coils; memory foam beds sit on a high-density foam base. Pocketed (individually wrapped) coils move on their own, which cuts motion from a partner and lets air through. Coil count alone is not a quality score: coil gauge (thicker wire is firmer), zoning and the foam above matter as much.

Foam quality

Denser foam generally holds its shape longer and resists body impressions. Most bed-in-a-box listings do not publish foam density, so a thick mattress is not automatically a durable one. Layer thickness and a clear layer breakdown are good signs.

Edge support

A reinforced perimeter keeps the edge from collapsing when you sit on it to dress, and stops the "roll-off" feeling. On a Full shared by two people, a firm edge makes more of the surface usable.

Cooling

Memory foam tends to hold body heat. Gel infusions, open-cell or perforated foam, breathable covers and coil cores help move heat away. "Cooling" claims are not standardized, so treat them as a tie-breaker, not a measurement.

Firmness & your body

Firmness is personal. Side sleepers usually prefer softer to medium so shoulders and hips sink in; back and stomach sleepers usually prefer medium-firm to firm to keep the spine level. Heavier sleepers often do better with firmer, thicker beds.

Warranty vs trial

A trial lets you return a mattress you simply don't like. A warranty only covers defects, usually sagging deeper than a set depth (often 1 to 1.5 inches) on a proper base. Brand trials may apply only to direct purchases, and store return policies differ, so check before buying.

Certifications

CertiPUR-US means the foam was tested for certain chemicals, emissions and durability. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the fabrics were tested for harmful substances. "Fiberglass-free" matters if you ever remove the cover. None of these measure comfort.
